Armenia has a population of 3 million and is a landlocked country with Turkey to the west and Georgia to the north. It gained its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.
Unemployment and poverty remain widespread and in recent years Armenia has been hit by mass waves of emigration as young families leave to find what they hope will be a better life abroad. Estimates suggest Armenia has lost up to a quarter of its population since independence.
Armenia became a member of the Council of Europe in 2001.
CHLG will begin work in Armenia in October 2007 with a pilot Community Action schools scheme. The pilot will involve High Schools and Special Schools, with an estimated 400 volunteers and children taking part.
CHLG hopes that this will be the first step to strengthening families and improving the lives of thousands of children in Armenia.
