Georgia
Georgia has a population of close to 5 million and is situated where Europe meets Asia – a strategically important crossroads – at the east end of the Black Sea. It borders Turkey and Armenia.
Georgia gained its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991 and since then has endured periods of civil war and unrest, some of which have been related to the breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
Russia has had troops in Georgia for over 200 years but agreed in 2005 to withdraw from its two remaining bases by the end of 2008.
CHLG work in Georgia
CHLG will begin work in Georgia in October 2007 with a pilot Community Action schools scheme. The pilot will involve High Schools and Special Schools, with an estimated 400 volunteers and children taking part.
CHLG hopes that this will be the first step to strengthening families and improving the lives of thousands of children in Georgia.
